Helping Burma and China

The Volunteer and Multicultural Clubs, under the direction of Ajarn Ignatius Tan, have set up a booth in front of the Atrium Cafeteria in order to solicit funds for the victims of the recent catastrophes in both Burma and China. Members of the MUIC community can make their contributions from May 28-30. Be generous and help those in need!

Brunei Conference

MUIC participated in the 10th AUN Education Forum and Young Speakers Contest at the Universiti Brunei Darusalam from May 20 to 27, 2008. The theme of the conference was "How ASEAN Can Move Forward Towards a Single ASEAN Community." Mr. Tanawat Phaovibul, a first-year student and Social Science major, won the speaking competition and was awarded the first prize of 1,000 Brunei dollars.

Student Activities

Seventeen members of the Volunteer Club traveled to the Wat PraBatNamPhu Center of Hope in Lop Buri on May 25. They visited HIV-AIDS patients at the center’s hospice and then proceeded to the orphanage where they spent time with the children and offered donations.

MBA Open House

The MBA Program in Business Modeling and Analysis conducted its Open House on May 23 at its facilities on the 12th floor of Sathorn City Tower. Attendees included members of the MUIC community, the general public and, most especially, prospective students interested in the program. They were given a brief tour of the facilities and attended a presentation on the program’s offerings.




 

An International Focus

The Academic Activities Department, in collaboration with Mahidol University’s Office of International Relations, sponsored a two-day seminar on May 22-23 at the Salaya Pavilion Hotel for the university’s various international relations offices. The purpose of the sessions was to promote greater cooperation and coordination among the offices and to consider upcoming training courses for their respective staffs.

Students from the TIM course, Consumer Behavior in the Tourism Industry, taught by Ajarn Kaewta Muangasame, set up a series of booths in front of the cafeteria on May 20-22, in order to create awareness about our environment and the perils of global warming. They distributed free tree saplings, promoted local products, sold cotton bags and other recycled products and accepted donations which went to a special fund to protect elephants.

Open House Season

The MBA Program in Business Modeling and Analysis will host an Open House on Friday, May 23, in order to showcase its facilities on the 12th floor of Sathorn City Tower, beginning at 5:30 p.m. You are cordially invited to attend.

The MM Program in Tourism and Hospitality Management Program will also hold an Open House on Saturday, May 31, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Salaya Pavilion Hotel and Training Center, which is open to the public. Anyone interested in this new postgraduate program should attend.

Training Program

The Academic Activities Department conducted a training program, Finance for Executives, on May 16 at the Salaya Pavilion Hotel. The 70 participants included deans, deputy and associate deans as well as members of the management staff from Mahidol University’s faculties and institutes. Issues of finance analysis, the finance market and analysis of investments were addressed by Assistant Professor Sarayut Nathaphan and Khun Sumalee Visetratana, Deputy Director for Administration.

Student Affairs conducted its regular trimester Welcoming Unity Camp on the weekend of May 10-11, this time on the Mahidol University campus in Kanchanaburi. The two-day session enabled new students to get to know one another and created a sense of cooperation and belonging.

English Summer Course

On May 9 the Pre-College (PC) Program hosted a presentation ceremony and farewell party for students who completed the 2008 English Summer Course. Dr. Chariya Brockelman, Director of MUIC, and Dr. Charles Windish, Director of the PC Program, delivered their congratulatory messages, after which the students received certificates of achievement. The event was attended by the PC faculty and staff, parents and representative members of MUIC.

The Office of Student Affairs and the MUIC Student Association sponsored a blood donation drive on Thursday, May 8, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Since the regular venue, the Seminar Room, was unavailable, students, faculty and staff were directed to the foyer area on the 2nd floor of Building 1.

On May 2, on the ground floor of Building 1, the MUIC Student Association conducted its regular trimester Club Expo, an event at which student clubs introduced their activities and recruited new members from among the third-trimester incoming students.

Final Touch

The college hosted its annual Final Touch program for prospective 2008 graduates on May 1 in the MUIC auditorium. Assistant Professor Anchalee Pongpun presented the Final Touch Report, after which Professor Chariya Brockelman, Director of MUIC, delivered a welcoming address. The program also included a presentation on personality development and an update on the MUIC Alumni Association.

The participants enjoyed lunch at the Salaya Pavilion Hotel and proceeded to the Seminar Room, where they were measured for and booked their graduation gowns.

No-Smoking Campaign

The college launched a week-long no-smoking campaign during the latter part of April, including an extensive exhibition on the ground floor of Building 1, in an effort to educate students about the risks of smoking and to encourage them to stop.

In concert with this campaign, new regulations have been posted. Modular classrooms 4 and 5 in front of Building 2 are now the only designated smoking areas. Any violation of this new directive will result in a 2,000 Baht fine each time.
