Taekwondo Championship

MUIC hosted its 2nd Taekwondo Open Championship on the weekend of May 19-20 in the Mahidol University gymnasium, at which 627 participants from all regions of Thailand, representing a total of 55 clubs, competed.

Medals were awarded for individual achievement throughout the two-day competition. Two special trophies, on behalf of Her Majesty the Queen, were awarded for overall team achievement.

Last year’s champions were also this year’s winners: the male team, the Taweesilp Taekwondo Club, from Pathum Thani Province, and the female team, the Ban Bua Thong Club, from Nonthaburi Province.

Cooking Demonstration

The MUIC Office of International Relations sponsored two cooking demonstrations, one on May 9 and another on May 16, at Chaiyapruk International House in an effort to introduce international students to the delights of Thai cuisine.

The participants were not mere onlookers; they were able to concoct a variety of Thai dishes, from sour prawn soup and seafood salads to minced pork with vegetables and green curry chicken, to cite a few examples.

Welcoming Unity Camp

On the weekend of May 12-13 new third-trimester students participated in another feature of the Freshman Seminar, the traditional Welcoming Unity Camp, which was held at the Mahidol University Campus in Kanchanaburi.

Accompanied by members of the Student Association and Student Affairs staff, along with other MUIC students, the group spent the weekend interacting with others, engaging in activities and generally acclimating themselves to the diverse facets of university life.

On May 11 the MUIC Student Association conducted its regular trimester Club Expo on the ground floor of Building 1.
The exhibition, which is an integral part of the Freshman Seminar, once again introduced students to the college’s 14 clubs. Special booths were constructed so that each club could highlight and promote its activities.

PC Summer Course Ends

The Pre-College (PC) Summer Course, a program designed for high school students who want to spend their summer break improving their English skills, ended on May 11.

Dr. Charles Windish, Director of the PC Program, presided over a special ceremony, recognizing both student participation and achievements.

Cooperation Across Borders

Twenty-seven members of the Student Association, along with two Student Affairs staff members, visited the Universiti Kebangsaan and Universiti Utara in Malaysia on May 2-5.

The objective was to share ideas on organizational models and strategies to promote student projects and activities, with an emphasis on community outreach.

This visitation was possible by the generous funding of Exxonmobil Limited. A full account of this exchange effort will appear in the next issue of the college newsletter, kaleidoscope.

Final Touch

Prospective 2007 graduates participated in the Final Touch program on May 1 in the MUIC auditorium. Assistant Professor Anchalee Pongpun, Senior Advisor for Student Affairs, and Professor Maleeya Kruatrachue, Interim Associate Dean for Academic Affairs, addressed the group, after which representatives from the John Robert Powers Personal Development Institute delivered a presentation on the requirements for personal development.
In addition, Ajarn Michael Naglis, liaison for the MUIC Alumni Association, encouraged the future graduates to become members of the association.

In the afternoon participants were measure for and reserved their graduation gowns. A special MUIC graduation ceremony and the official Mahidol University commencement are scheduled for July.
