No Smoking Day

MUIC participated in the international No Tobacco Day on Wednesday, May 31, 2006. The Office of Public Relations set up a number of displays and exhibitions, some of which were interactive, including testimonials by faculty members as to how and why they quit smoking.
There was also a fashion show in order to attract student attention on the second floor in front of the Atrium Cafeteria. Ajarn Anchalee Pongpun, Advisor for Students Affairs, briefly addressed the students regarding the dangers of smoking.

Hotel Management Seminar
The Travel Industry Management (TIM) Division sponsored a seminar, entitled “How Easy Is It to Manage a Hotel?” on May 29 in the MUIC Seminar Room. The guest speaker was Mr. Montien Tantakit, Assistant Managing Director of the Montien Hotel in Bangkok, who addressed the full gamut of responsibilities in managing a hotel and fielded questions from the participants.
This was the first in a series of seminar sessions that will be conducted by the TIM Division.

Welcome Guide Download
The MUIC Welcome Guide 2006 for International Students is now available for downloading from the MUIC website.
The newly updated and designed guide was compiled for foreign students who are going to study at Mahidol University International College. It is packed with information about life at MUIC, the academic system, and everyday life in Thailand.

Teambuilding in Kanchanaburi
The MUIC Student Association, in collaboration with the Office of Student Affairs, conducted a Welcoming Camp for third-trimester freshmen on May 20-21 at the Mahidol University Kanchanaburi Campus.
This activity is part of the orientation process and a key component of the Freshman Seminar, a requirement for all MUIC students.
One hundred and twenty freshmen, accompanied by 160 upper class students, alumni, faculty and staff, participated in the weekend, whose purpose was to generate a sense of school spirit among the recent arrivals. There were a variety of activities which were meant to promote communication, team-building and disciplinary skills in order to create a sense of community and common purpose.

Anniversary Symposium

As part of its 20th anniversary celebrations, the college hosted a symposium, ”MUIC: Past, Present and Future”, on May 15 in the auditorium.
Dr. Serene Piboonniyom, former Director of ISDP, provided an overview of the college’s first ten years, including its curriculum, organizational structure, recruitment tactics and overall growth, particularly in terms of faculty and students.
Interim Dean Chariya Brockelman reviewed MUIC’s organizational and academic development over the last ten years, citing in particular the college’s liberal arts component and the strength of its graduates.
Dr. Chaiwat Viboonsawas, a noted academician, addressed MUIC’s future in a globalized world which will require new skills in science, technology, humanities and social science, more independent study and more outbound MUIC students studying abroad.
Participants at the symposium included representatives from MUIC, Mahidol University and other universities who either have international programs or are in the process of establishing them.

Soccer Champions

Members of the MUIC Sports Club participated in the Inter Cup 2006, an annual soccer competition among international university programs in the greater metropolitan Bangkok area. Six teams participatet in the event, which was held at Thammasat University's Thaprajan Campus.
The MUIC male soccer team won first place while the college's female team secured second.

Final Touch Session

MUIC conducted its “Final Touch” session on Sunday, May 14, for this year’s prospective graduates. Interim Dean Chariya Brockelman welcomed the group, after which Ajarns Dale Rorex and Alexander Korff addressed post-graduation issues. After lunch participants were measured for their gowns.
A special graduation ceremony will be held in the MUIC auditorium on July 4.
The official Mahidol University commencement exercise will take place at the Suan Amporn Auditorium on July 5, 2006.

Building for the Future

Construction on the new extension continues to progress and, by all accounts, is proceeding on schedule.
On Thursday, May 11, members of the MUIC community participated in a ceremony to mark the setting of the building’s central pillar. Buddhist monks chanted their prayers and flowers were laid at the site, a traditional practice that is meant to ensure the safety and protection of the new extension.
The next step in the construction has begun, namely, working on the building’s elevated first storey.

A Landmark Year:
MUIC 20th Anniversary 2006
Picture: Tree-planting ceremony in honor of the 60th anniversary of His Majesty's accession to the throne, which coincides with the MUIC anniversary.
In March of 1986 the Mahidol University Council and Ministry of University Affairs formally endorsed the creation of a new academic enterprise, designated at that time as the International Student Degree Program (ISDP), providing an international-style education in English leading to a Bachelor Degree in Science or the Arts.
Ten years later the name was changed to Mahidol University International College, giving the program the full status and weight of a university faculty.
In observing this landmark 20th anniversary, MUIC has organized a series of celebratory events which began in March, 2006, and will continue through the end of this calendar year. (...)
